Planet in Focus 2011

Planet in Focus

October 12 - 16 on various screens around Toronto

"Canada’s top environmental film and video festival is a place to stoke debate or simply be awed by the beauty of nature.” ~ Up! Magazine

Sierra Club is proud to announce we are again co-sponsoring Planet in Focus showings of the movies below:

Saturday, October 15 | 2:00 PM | Royal Ontario Museum

The Gold of Others (L’Or des autres)

Canadian Premiere

Director in attendance

On the heels of Osisko Mining Corporation's 2012 construction of two open-pit gold mines near Thunder Bay, Ontario, The Gold of Others is a timely demonstration of the struggle between the federal Mining Act’s prioritization of the right to exploit subsoil resources and citizen rights to protect land and property in Malartic, Quebec.

Saturday, October 15 | 7:15 PM | Al Green Theatre in the Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre

There Once was an Island: Te Henua e Nnoho

Toronto Premiere

Shot over four years on the Takuu Atoll off the coast of Papua New Guinea, There Once Was an Island examines the ever-changing and very personal debate vexing clans indigenous to the flood-stricken and fast-eroding island chain. With negligible provisions arriving from the mainland and no government strategy for relocation, the Takuu community looks to ocean scientists to assess the viability of remaining on their homeland.

Tickets for these screenings go on sale on September 23 after 5 PM. Early Bird Passes are now available for purchase at www.planetinfocus.org, by phone at 416-599-TIFF or in person at the TIFF Bell Lightbox Box Office, 350 King Street West.
